At Quartz Mountain Animal Hospital, we strive to provide the best possible care for all life stages. As such, we are pleased to announce that we offer acupuncture and other integrative medical services through Dr. Colleen Brown.

Dr. Brown has been a general practice veterinarian for many years but her interest in nontraditional medicine led her to the Chi Institute in Florida, through which she is certified in veterinary acupuncture. Her passion didn’t end there, and she is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Veterinary medicine, which will give her a further background in acupuncture as well as other modalities such as herbalism, Tui Na, and food therapy.

Acupuncture has been used as medicine for thousands of years and has substantial literature to support its efficacy. Acupuncture points are areas within the body a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, lymphatic vessels and small arterioles. Stimulation of these points releases neurotransmitters, including serotonin and beta-endorphins.

Acupuncture is a highly affective adjunct treatment for most common illnesses and especially pain. Some common examples are: arthritis, gastrointestinal upset, cancer, allergies, and other chronic conditions.

Acupuncture has few side-effects, uses very thin, sterile, steel needles in precise placement and is generally very well tolerated by both cats and dogs!
